In recent weeks, our nation has once again been shaken by heartbreaking and unsettling events. These tragedies are painful reminders that we live in a broken world where evil is real, and where gathering space and the sanctuaries we hold sacred are not always immune from harm.
For generations, churches have been seen as places of refuge—safe havens where people gather for worship, fellowship, and encouragement. And while that truth remains, we must also recognize the sobering reality: safety and security do not happen by accident. They require intentionality.
Stewardship Extends Beyond Bricks and Mortar
At Smart Church Solutions, we talk often about facility stewardship—the responsibility entrusted to us to care for the buildings God has given us. But stewardship goes beyond HVAC systems, preventive maintenance, or capital reserves. It includes the safety of the people who enter our doors or walk on our campuses.
Scripture calls us to shepherd well (John 10, Acts 20). A shepherd is vigilant, alert to danger, and intentional in protecting the flock. In today’s world, that means churches must thoughtfully plan for security, just as we plan for worship, discipleship, and outreach.
Security Is Not Fear—It’s Love in Action
Let me be clear: this is not about leading with fear. Fear paralyzes. But love motivates us to act. To put plans in place. To train our staff and volunteers. To evaluate how we secure our spaces. To prepare for emergencies so that we are not caught off guard.
When we plan for security, we are living out the Great Commandment—loving our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31). Protecting those entrusted to our care is a tangible expression of love.
Practical Steps for Churches
While every church’s context is different, here are some intentional actions that every ministry should consider:
- Establish a Security Team: Not just volunteers, but trained individuals who understand both hospitality and preparedness.
- Review Your Policies: From child check-in to building access, clarity and consistency are key.
- Invest in Training: Empower staff and volunteers with knowledge of emergency response, medical aid, and threat awareness.
- Evaluate Your Facility: Look at entrances, exits, lighting, cameras, and access control. Stewardship includes proactive upgrades.
- Partner with Local Authorities: Build relationships with police, fire, and EMS. Invite them to walk your property and provide feedback.
A Stewardship Conviction
Safety is not optional. It is not a “nice to have.” It is a conviction—rooted in stewardship, shepherding, and love for God’s people. Our mission at Smart Church Solutions is to equip churches with the tools and insights to steward their facilities well. That includes not only efficiency and sustainability, but also safety and security. The stakes are too high to be casual about this.
As national events remind us of the dangers around us, may we respond not with fear, but with wisdom and action. Let us be intentional. Let us be vigilant. And let us be faithful stewards—not only of our buildings, but of the precious lives God has entrusted to our care.
“Well done good and faithful servant” — Matthew 25:23
