Do you get overwhelmed by the big tasks in front of you? Do they feel so overwhelming that you don’t even start because the end is so far in the future? We have all been there.
5-Minute Room Rescue
I was recently reading about a concept called the “5-Minute Room Rescue.” Here is what I read from Flylady:
“Pick one room to focus on Kitchen or Living Room! JUST ONE ROOM! Set your timer for 5 Minutes! That’s it! Work as fast as you can to pick up and put away! Children love to play this game too! Have you been thinking that using a timer was stupid? We have timers everywhere in our home. Set your timer and set yourself FREE from CHAOS!”
The basis behind this concept is not to reach the end goal of having a clean house. Instead, you work towards having a clean-er one. It only needs to happen five minutes at a time.
The Suffix’s Power
Let’s go back to grade school. A suffix is a letter or group of letters added to the end of the word. In turn, it transforms the word's meaning. Just a few letters can change an entire word. Just like a few minutes can transform a whole mindset.
Notice what the “-er” suffix does to the situation above? It makes the goal progressive instead of all or nothing. It makes a situation more manageable and way less overwhelming.
Make Your Facility Better-er
Look around your facility today. Are there tasks you need to accomplish, but you continue to procrastinate? If so, let’s put this suffix to work. Instead of disregarding a task altogether, let’s utilize the power of “-er.”
Think in terms of:
- Cleaner
- Brighter
- Sharper
- Higher
- Smarter
- Smoother
- Tighter
- Easier
- Faster
- Nicer
- Safer
- Earlier
- Quieter
- Stronger
In Conclusion
This week, think about what “-er” words can you add to the ist above. Take it a step further and then analyze how small steps will impact your life and that of your team — onward.
